Netflix Headquarters (Original) – The Sobrato Organization
Part of a larger mixed-use community designed by Form4 Architecture, Netflix headquarters comprises four 60,000-square-foot office buildings facing the main street of the site. The project exemplifies the firm’s ability to deliver a work of architecture that satisfies the client while it complies with city planning restrictions and observes building codes. The abstracted villa-like Tuscan exterior—stucco wall, terracotta roof, and arched windows—contains an unexpected crisp, modern interior of exposed steel and wood floors. The exterior elements and walkways complement the picturesque urban fabric, while the interiors are aptly cutting-edge for one of the most successful dot-com ventures.
Netflix Headquarters provides a healthy environment designed to foster high productivity in its employees. Operable windows allow personal control and underfloor air distribution improves air quality and reduces energy costs. Sustainable materials, selected for their low toxicity and high recycle content, include wood floors made of rubber trees salvaged from depleted plantations that would have otherwise been burned; reclaimed carpet backing; tile floors of recycled windshields; and ceilings of recycled plastic bottles. Each contributes to the ecologically intelligent material palette. The result is a setting that flows around and into the central courtyard, creating vital, urban and useful social gathering spaces set against a backdrop that is equally socially responsible and playful.
